About Our Programs
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Lafayette College provides students many ways to engage their mathematical and statistical interests. The broad array of programs (including various majors, a concentration, and minors offered/supported by the department) is a reflection of the ways the mathematical sciences are studied and used in the world around us. Quantitative reasoning is fundamental to many disciplines, and our curricular offerings are built to support all of these areas of inquiry.
The department offers programs in the following areas of mathematics:
- Applied mathematics: harnesses mathematical tools and techniques to model, analyze, and solve problems across disciplines
- Mathematics and Economics: combines mathematical rigor with economic theory to model complex systems, optimize decision-making, and analyze markets and policy. (Jointly administered with the Economics department.)
- Statistics: focuses on collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data to draw meaningful conclusions and inform decision-making under uncertainty
- Theoretical mathematics: explores the abstract structures, patterns, and logical foundations of mathematics through the development of rigorous proofs
Additionally, the department offers significant support for the interdisciplinary minor program in Data Science.

- Bachelor of Science in Mathematics
- Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics (Applied, Statistics, Theoretical tracks)
- Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Economics
